Pergerakan Wanita UMNO Kudat Division together with The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu, Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Sabah, Kudat, Klinik Pergigian, Banggi and Sabah Medical Centre Healthcare Sdn Bhd organized Medical Outreach Camp at Kg Limbuak Laut, Pulau Banggi on Saturday 23rd April 2011.
Rotarian Dr Ravi Mandalam led a team of 14 doctors including a dental surgeon, paediatrician and radiologist took part in the medical outreach ably assisted by a team of pharmacist, sonographer, staff nurses, other hospital and health department staff and 25 Rotarians numbering a total of 44 persons. The medical party consisted of private practitioners, government doctors and staff from Hospital Likas, Hospital Queen Elizabeth I and II and staff of Sabah Medical Health care Sdn Bhd. Medicines for the camp were entirely sponsored by Sabah Medical Healthcare Sdn Bhd. Two visiting medical students from United Kingdom also participated in the Camp.
The medical team arrived at Pulau Banggi a day earlier on 22nd April after a journey by road from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat and by ferry from Kudat to Pulau Banggi and left on 24th morning for the return trip to Kota Kinabalu.
Local organization was ably provided by me ( Datin Aminah Ambrose, Chief of Wanita UMNO Kudat Division, Chairperson MPWK Parliment Kudat ) and dedicated team of Wanita UMNO (skuad Sayang), AJK Bhgn member En Jasnie Eser, Secreetary for Juara Rakyat Program En Rusulan Rahaban, JASA Officer En Aziz Sindung and Puteri UMNO members who assisted in ensuring that this program run smoothly. Banners were posted at the Kudat ferry jetty and at Kg. Karakit to publicize the event to the villages on the island. I would like to thank FELCRA Berhad , Banggi for their co-operation in providing transportation and also to some individuals who gave us the permission to use their vehicles. My gratitude and thanks to En Jasnie Eser (Ketua Cawangan UMNO Kg. Limbuak Laut),who helped organize accommodation, transport and food for the visiting medical party and food for the residents who attended the camp at his residence and also some at his children's house.
The Medical Outreach Camp was conducted at the Community Hall (Balai Raya) of Kg Limbuak Laut. Over 500 patients were attended to which included patients of all age groups. Blood sugar estimation and body mass index (BMI) were conducted by staff of the State Health Department. About 200 dental extractions done and 35 patients underwent portable ultrasound scanning. Patients requiring hospital treatment were given referrals to the Hospital Kudat.
The team also participated in a motivation seminar organised by Wanita UMNO Kudat & MPWK Kudat headed by me, for the students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Banggi during which Rtn Iskandar Ahmad, Rtn Dr Rashid, En Mohd Azhar (CEO of Sabah Medical Center) and Cik Fia Iskandar gave talks on a range of topics and also share their success stories to the students to motivate the young minds. I would like to thank Discipline & Counselling Teacher , Encik Dixon for his commitment and ensuring that this seminar went ahead as planned.
The entire program was a rewarding experience for both the organizers and the residents of Pulau Banggi. The medical team which consisted of several young doctors got a first-hand experience of life in remote areas of the Sabah, the development undertaken by the Government as well as the standard of good health enjoyed by the village communities. Residents of the community benefited by the service rendered to them at their doorstep. The Camp set the tone for similar future efforts in the same direction.
This group photo was taken upon arrival from Pulau Banggi on 24th April, after we had brunch at Rakyat Restoran, Kudat while some of the members of the had left for Kota Kinabalu as they have prior engagement.
this 10 year old boy was scalded as a pot of hot water fell on him ..his right hand , chest n left knee had burns which happened about 5 days prior to our visit.. the doctor advised his mother to continue medication and to visit the nearest hospital as when the skin grows it might affect his finger n arms movement. as if not treated properly his skin may tighten up and hence he might not be able to move his fingers n hand properly. I fear to think what would have happen to this little boy if we did not have this program.
everyone waited patiently for their turn to register n given medical attention.. aside from getting FREE medical examination, they were also given dental treatment, ultra-sound scanning, blood sugar test and also the kids were given de-worming and also taught how to take brush their teeth properly n also proper dental care. kids were also given free tooth brush n tooth paste.
